Remodeling Kitchens In The Historic Town Of Wolcott
Wolcott is a town situated in New Haven County, Connecticut, United States. It is mainly residential with a population of 16,680 according to the 2010 census. The town was established in the 1730s by the Connecticut Colony and was known as Farming bury then, but it got renamed Wolcott after being incorporated in 1796.
Earlier in 1730’s, people living in this town had no official identity of their own except from the major towns of either Waterbury, Woodbridge or Farmington. Then in 1770, the people submitted a petition in the Connecticut General Assembly to create the First Society of Farming bury and succeeded. Now that it got independent, the people also gained some religious, legal, and financial freedom from the big towns of Waterbury and Farmington. However, the only hindrance now was in the political boundaries of the area as they were unchanged for more than two decades after freedom. At that time, the parish was greatly self-sufficient, but it was still not considered as a separate region as the political boundaries were not separated.
The people then made a petition in the Connecticut General Assembly in 1796, making a request that the town should be made an independent town, separate from Waterbury and Farmington. Assembly voted and the results were a tie, half in its favor and half against the proposal. The tie-breaking vote in favor of the people was cast by Lieutenant Governor Oliver Wolcott, and the land was officially got separated by Waterbury and Farmington and was made into the new town. Lieutenant Governor's deciding vote was the turning point, hence the people renamed their newly established town as “Wolcott”. The 1800 United States Census was the first census that was conducted after Wolcott's formation and counted 948 people living within the town.
There are no natural lakes in Wolcott but there are many artificial reservoirs made from dams which were constructed on small rivers. Scoville Reservoir, which is also known as Wood tick Reservoir, covers an area of 121 acres and was constructed by making a dam on the Mad River in central Wolcott. It was initially built in 1917 to supply water to the Scovill Manufacturing Company, a brass manufacturing mill, and now the lake is owned by the town. Other reservoirs that are formed in the town include Chestnut Hill Reservoir, Hitchcock Lake, Southington Reservoir, New Britain Reservoir and Cedar Lake and Dunham Mill Pond.
The highest point in New Haven County is located in Wolcott; a top called Lindsley Hill, which is approximately 1,046 feet above sea level.
The famous people belonging to this small town are:
• Amos Bronson Alcott (1799–1888)
