Huntington’s historically rich town witnessed many political conflicts and wars like the Battle of Long Island during the American Revolutionary War, where it acted as a headquarters for British Troops. Initially, three Englishmen bought this parcel of land from the Matinecock tribe.and formed a settlement. Although it was a part of the New Amsterdam colony, its majority inhabitants were Englishmen. The town vote of 1660 led to its association with the Connecticut colony until 1664, when the British renamed the New Amsterdam colony to New York.
